Summary Review Paper EDAC 631
Group 2
Kyndra Haggard, Ray Harmon and Mari Swayne
April 12, 2015
(Ray, Mari and Kyndra contributed significant points to answer both portions of the final paper)

Throughout this semester we have viewed adult/community education from many different aspects. Some significant points we have picked up on are:
·         Learning what counts as adult education  with different authors perspectives and theories
o   We went into great detail on the contributions and theories of Booker T. Washington and Malcolm Knowles
·         Where adult education came from and how it has framed our current processes. The Andragogy system put in into perspective by Malcolm Knowles.
·         The article we read on conversations with long-time adult educators showed how different generations view things differently due to the societal issues they grew up with.
·         The pros and cons of adult education and professionalization. It had not been a thought before over the debate of how adult education could change by professionalizing it positively and negatively.
·         The discussions on the three types of education was very helpful as well. I had never really thought about education being broken down into Formal, Informal and Non-Formal areas.
·         Researching the many adult organizations
o   We went into detail on:
§   The American Association for Adult and Continuing Education (AAACE) and how they support adult education.
§  The Workers’ Education Association and how they educate adult learners.
·         The excellent exposure we have received as we learned about organizations such as Highlander, the history of adult education, particularly in the United States.   How it affected the various wars, building of urban centers, providing culture to communities, etc.
·         The Highlander Project was the catalyst for many in the civil rights movements of the 1960s. I always assumed many of these people just did things on their own but now I see where they were empowered by education and by other people to make a stand such as Rosa Parks refusing to give up her seat in the front of a city bus.
·         The arguments of where adult education is going in the future. Some see it as diminishing because of the thought from many that it is not necessary and can’t see the value.
To explain the meaning of what is Adult/Community Education is very abstract. Many people have a different definition of adult education. As a group here is what we have come up with.
·         Adult Community Education is the education that is available for adults who want to succeed further in their life past what is considered necessity. Necessity being high school and undergraduate studies.
·         Adult Education means a variety of things for many people.  It ranges from adult literacy programs to those adults pursuing doctoral degrees.
·         One of the ways to explain adult education to my students is to compare it to a bridge. If you are at a place and need to get to another place sometimes you need a bridge to get you there. Adult Education can be a bridge to better your life by taking you from where you are to a better place mentally and emotionally and by boosting self-esteem and overall just changing you to be a better person.

·         Sometimes the education itself is not as important as the journey to complete it. Many lessons are learned along the way that are not all academic. Time management is a lesson anyone taking adult education classes must learn very quickly.

  1. Very nice job on your summary and your e-archive. I enjoyed your pictures of the 1960's. Also, learning about the authors, since I have been in class with a few of you. My favorite part is your last paragraph, about the journey to complete your education. Time management is one of the most important lessons I learned when I started taking adult education classes.

  2. Group 2,
The e-archive that you developed is clean, fresh and easy to navigate. Nice touch to add the pictures of yourself so that people connect a face with the members of your group. The summary that you provided on the history of adult educators and researching the adult educational organization was very informative.

  3. Survival Memo-
Hey guys great job on that survival memo! I absolutely LOVED it! It was fun and catchy, great work! I also liked that you mentioned how important APA is in Bo's class. Out of her two classes that I have taken almost every point I've had deducted was because of that darn APA formatting!

  4. I LOVED the survival memo! Very catchy "Mission Impossible" theme. I agree with the importance of reading the syllabus over and over again, very important. It is very important as well to keep up on the weekly posts, as you mentioned. Great job!

  6. Wow, Kyntra, Mari and Ray,

This is an incredibly interesting and creative survival memo! You should share your experience of how you created this video! I absolutely love it! Each of you is a big shinning star in the video, and Ray's picture is very cool! LOL! I wonder what it would look like if your survival memo were to be reported just like the TV news is reported! :)
